Year in Review – 2022

Continuing last year’s tradition, I recorded key events, activities, book reviews, and travels of this year using Instagram stories. This is my attempt to piece them together.

Key events & activities:

I tried cross-country skiing for the first time since I moved to Norway in July 2021. I genuinely think it is probably one of the best things that Scandinavians have invented.

Death of a legend: Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, one of India’s most renowned cultural icons whose career spanned over eight decades, passed away on 6th February 2022.

The return of history: Russia started a brutal invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022. As of December 18, 2022, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) had confirmed a total of 6,826 civilian deaths caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. 428 of them were kids. OHCHR estimates the real number of casualties is much higher. The war has thus far caused an estimated 127 billion US dollars in damage to physical infrastructure.

Microplastic in human blood: For the first time, microplastic contamination has been found in the blood of humans; over 80% of those examined had microscopic particles, raising fears about their long-term health effects.

WindEurope Annual Event: I attended WindEurope’s annual event in Bilbao from the 5th to the 7th of April. This year’s annual event was notable for various reasons – the first annual event after the new normal, recorded wind farm installations despite supply chain disruption, and notably for innovations in recycling and circularity of wind turbines. Here are my key takeaways:

My parents’ first trip abroad: This visit was very special for me as it was my parents’ first trip outside India. We visited several places during their visits, including Oslo, Trondheim, Røros, and KrakĂłw.

Rafael Nadal’s 22nd Grand Slam Win: One of my all-time favorite athletes, Rafael Nadal, won his 22nd Grand Slam this year in Roland Garros, shattering all previous Grand Slam win records of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nadal has been dominating Roland Garros since 2005, winning this tournament 14 times in his 18 appearances.

Roger Federer’s Retirement: Tennis legend Roger Federer announced his retirement on 15th September. He played his last match on 23rd September 2022 at Laver Cup. Federer was one of the biggest (if not the) reason I developed an interest in this sport.

I traveled to India first time since I moved to Norway 18 months ago.
